Poroshiri‑dake (幌尻岳) – Route Description via Poroshiri Mountain Lodge & Nukabira River
Poroshiri‑dake, the highest peak of the Hidaka Mountains, is a long, remote, and deeply rewarding climb. The approach begins at the Poroshiri Mountain Lodge, the closest point accessible by vehicle, where the trail follows a forest road before narrowing into a rugged path along the Nukabira River. The early section is gentle, moving through dense mixed forest of Sakhalin fir, spruce, and broadleaf birch, with the sound of the river guiding you upstream.
As the valley narrows, the route transitions into a series of river crossings, boulder steps, and short scrambles along the riverbank. The Nukabira River section is one of the defining features of this approach — hikers weave between gravel bars, shallow crossings, and moss‑covered stones beneath steep, forested walls. In early season, water levels can be high, and careful footwork is essential.
After leaving the river, the trail steepens sharply, climbing through a cool, shaded forest toward the Poroshiri Mountain Lodge (幌尻山荘). Many hikers stay here before the summit push, but strong parties may continue directly upward. Beyond the lodge, the route enters classic Hidaka terrain: steep, root‑laced forest paths that rise relentlessly toward the upper ridges.
Breaking above the treeline, the landscape opens dramatically. The trail follows a long, airy ridge of alpine dwarf pine, volcanic gravel, and exposed rock, with sweeping views across the folded ridges of the Hidaka range. The final ascent is a steady climb along a broad, open slope leading to the summit plateau.
From the top of Poroshiri‑dake, the panorama is exceptional: the full spine of the Hidaka Mountains stretching north and south, the deep valleys carved by glacial and river erosion, and distant views toward the Tokachi plains and Pacific coast. The sense of scale and remoteness is unmatched — this is one of Hokkaido’s great mountain summits.
The descent follows the same route, dropping back through the alpine ridge, steep forest, and the long Nukabira River approach before returning to the trailhead near the lodge.
Poroshiri‑dake via the Nukabira River is a long, demanding, and iconic Hidaka climb, best suited to experienced hikers comfortable with river travel, steep forested slopes, and long days in remote terrain. For those who make the journey, it offers one of the most memorable mountain experiences in Hokkaido.
