Tokachi‑dake (十勝岳) – Route Description from Hakuginso Campsite
The Hakuginso Campsite trailhead offers one of the most direct and scenic approaches to Tokachi‑dake, placing you immediately on the southern slopes of the Daisetsuzan volcanic group. From the trailhead beside Hakuginso Lodge, the route begins on a well‑maintained path through low alpine forest and shrubland, with early views of the broad volcanic ridges rising above. I t is quite overgrown in places, so just watch your step with the low branches.
Within 20-25 minutes, the trail leaves the last of the trees and enters a wide, open landscape of pumice fields, ash slopes, and scattered dwarf pine. The climb is steady but not technical, following a clear ridge that gradually steepens as it approaches the active volcanic zone. Steam vents and sulfur deposits become visible on the flanks of the mountain, and the terrain shifts to loose volcanic gravel underfoot. You'll pass the volcano shelter and seismic instrument antennas and equipment within an hour of easy climbing.
The middle section of the route crosses a series of broad, exposed slopes with sweeping views toward the Furano plain, the rolling highlands of Biei‑dake, and the rugged volcanic skyline of the central Daisetsuzan range. Weather can change quickly here, and the open terrain means strong winds are common. As you come over the rim and into the main crater area you will be greeted with a surreal view of incredible volcanic rock formations that look other-worldly. This si where care needs to be taken and staying on the paths is absolutely a must! Do not wander down towards any of the inner craters!! GASES AND STEAM ARE REAL HAZARDS IN THESE ENVIRONMENTS.
As you approach the upper mountain, the trail steepens significantly, climbing through bands of loose ash and hardened lava. The final ascent follows a narrow ridge leading to the summit plateau, where the landscape opens dramatically. From the top, the views are exceptional: the steaming crater of Tokachi‑dake, the jagged ridges of Biei‑dake and Sandan‑yama, and the vast volcanic basin stretching toward Fukiage Onsen and the Tokachi plains.
The descent returns along the same route, dropping quickly back into the pumice fields and eventually reaching the quiet alpine forest near Hakuginso. Many hikers finish their climb with a soak in the Hakuginso hot spring baths, a perfect way to recover after a demanding day on the mountain.
Tokachi‑dake from Hakuginso is a challenging, high‑exposure volcanic route with some of the most dramatic scenery in Hokkaido. It’s ideal for experienced hikers seeking a full‑day adventure in the heart of the Daisetsuzan volcanic zone.
